Family-owned

Arriving in Argentina from Italy as a result of hardships from WWI, Gustavo Caligiore’s grandfather began working in the vineyards of Mendoza. The family eventually purchased the vineyard for themselves and began farming organically, selling fruit to some of the biggest wine names in Argentina.

In 2002, the Caligiore family made the decision to start producing their own wines as a way of highlighting the care and effort put into their organic viticulture. Gustavo Caligiore runs the winery and vineyards with assistance from his father and a few close friends with long-standing family ties to the winery.

Growing only the grapes felt like something was missing and putting effort into such a pristine organic product and not seeing people love and treat it the same way was disappointing, hence the decision to make wine.

Winemaking

Caligiore organically farms a 35 acre vineyard called Finca Cayanta. Planted in 1973, the winery produces around 8,000 cases per year from the single vineyard. At 3,000 ft elevation, the high altitude combined with the typical heavy soils of Luján de Cuyo result in explosive fruit and full bodied wines. The acidity is racy and well balanced, laying the platform for great aging potential.

Embracing a minimalist winemaking concept, Caligiore wines are fermented using indigenous yeast and without any stabilizing or fining agents. All the wines are unfiltered.

Sustainability

Organic farming and natural winemaking principles lie at the heart of Caligiore’s philosophy. Gustavo Caligiore is quick to tell anyone that it is the terroir and grapes that are the main stars in his cellar and wines.

Crafting these organic wines with an elegant, fresh and fruit forward style allows Caligiore to explore the ultimate terroir expression in their wines. Their strength lies in their conviction to organic principles to facilitate this, all the while preserving and protecting the environment.
