About Chateau Saint Nabor

Crafting quality French wine for six generations, the Castor family of Chateau Saint Nabor is the perfect example of continuity and tradition. The history of this Rhône Valley family estate goes back centuries, and their tasting room is located in part of an ancient chapel on their property from the 11th century to prove it.

The estate is located in the tiny town of Cornillon in southeast France. The region was classified under the Côtes du Rhône appellation in 1972 after years of lobbying for recognition for their quality wine by fourth generation owner, Edmond Castor.

Family-owned

From 1870 through 1945, wine production was small and mostly for the family's own consumption during the first three Castor generations. Fourth generation Edmond Castor was the spark that started commercial production.

Gérard Castor took control after his father’s untimely death and saw to increasing vineyard plantings with a focus on quality wine production. In 2011, Gérard’s two sons, Jérémie and Raphaël took the reins from their father to steer the business into the future. The brothers each have small children themselves now and are looking forward to the seventh generation continuing the legacy.

We have the seventh generation coming and even though they are very young, they love the tractors, coming into the cellar and looking at the vines. We are making sure the next generation is in love with grapes and winemaking!

Winemaking

Classified roughly as 50% AOC and 50% IGP, the Chateau Saint Nabor wines are very characteristic of the Côtes du Rhône appellation. Vineyard plantings consist of 65% red grapes and 35% white.

The terroir is diverse, with soils on the terraces composed of chalk and clay producing powerful and well structured wines, while the soils on the lower hillside are sand and clay, producing light and aromatic wines. In order to express the best characters of each wine, some are aged only in tanks while others receive a few months in neutral French oak barrels.

Sustainability

To the Castor family, vineyards are of the utmost importance. Agriculture on the estate is conducted in a manner in which the environment is respected – “Agriculture Raisonnée”. This is done to express the terroir in each wine, rich and unique to each plot.

The winery is certified by the French government as a High Environmental Value (HEV) producer. This certification is a guarantee that the pressures placed on the environment by their farming practices (on air, water, soil, climate, biodiversity and landscape) are kept to a minimum.
